Rouen

Rouen is the capital of the Upper Normandy (French: Haute-Normandie) region of France. As of 2007, the city had an estimated population of 109,000, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of 541,410.

Key Facts about Rouen

Here are some facts about Rouen:
  1. Rouen is the capital of the Upper Normandy (French: Haute-Normandie) region of France.

  2. As of 2007, Rouen had an estimated population of 109,000, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of 541,410.

  3. People from Rouen are called Rouennais.

  4. During the Middle Ages, Rouen was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties that ruled England and large parts of France from 1066 until the mid 15th century.

  5. Rouen was the scene of Joan of Arc's execution in 1431.

  6. Today Rouen is known for its Gothic cathedral (which was the subject of a series of paintings by Claude Monet, its historic astronomical clock (Gros Horloge), Rouen Castle, and its many surviving half-timbered buildings.

  7. After its original spire was destroyed by a fire caused by lightning in 1822, a new spire was added to Rouen Cathedral, the lantern tower. This tower was topped with an iron spike, and when completed in 1876, the new spire made Rouen Cathedral the tallest building in the world - a title it held until 1880 when overtaken by the construction of Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom) in Cologne, Germany.

  8. Rouen was also the home of the French Grand Prix for a period. It intermittently hosted the race on the nearby Rouen-Les-Essarts track between 1952 and 1968.

Product Description:
Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) was an artist perpetually in search of new horizons. This fascinating visual tour reveals the full extent of Gauguin’s travels and their influence on his unique style. Gauguin’s several lengthy trips to Tahiti and the Marquesas between 1891 and the artist’s death, visits that provided the inspiration for many of his most famous canvases, are well known and documented here in rich detail. Less familiar are stories from his early years living with his family in Peru, which Gauguin would later describe as “idyllic,” and his years in the French Navy, which would take him to numerous destinations including India. Throughout the 1880s, as a young man starting a family and struggling to become established within the art world, the restless Gauguin moved often—within Paris, to Rouen, to Copenhagen, and back to Paris.

Abundantly illustrated with hundreds of vibrant images, including archival material and the artist’s own works, The Gauguin Atlas brings to life the places that Gauguin visited and lived.  The book’s handsome design seamlessly integrates maps and other images with an accessible and engaging text that narrates Gauguin’s travels; what emerges is a vivid picture of an artist continually seeking new experience and inspiration for his art.
