Located near the Atlantic Coast on the River Garonne in southwestern France, Bordeaux is the capital city of both the Aquitaine region and the prefecture of the Gironde department. As of 2010, the city had a population of 239,157, with 1,127,776 people living in the city's metropolitan area.
